Removing epoxy and PU floor coatings: mill them off instead of grinding

The old epoxy or PU coating in the garage, workshop or yard has to come off before recoating. The ATLAS drum milling machine peels the layer off at a set depth, 82 mm per pass; the Galeski Manufaktur shows epoxy and PU coating in its video on the ATLAS MAX 82.

What matters here

  • Tough-elastic or hard

Tough-elastic layers tend to smear under a grinding disc rather than come off; hard layers call for a tool that cuts. The milling drum peels off – with the bond that suits the layer.

  • Layer thickness varies

Sealant, roller coating or a thick self-levelling layer – the layer can vary in thickness on the same floor. On the ATLAS the milling depth is adjustable, also between two passes.

  • Fine dust in garage and hall

Coating and the concrete underneath produce fine dust during removal, often in enclosed rooms. It belongs captured at the drum – the guard with extraction hose is built for that.

Step by step

  1. Check layer thickness and hardness, choose the drum

Choose the drum by the shop information: Diamond Blue (soft bond) for coatings under 2 mm; Hybrid Grey (hard bond, hybrid segments and PCD grit) and PCD Black (14 PCD cutting edges) for coatings under and over 2 mm. PCD Black is designed for particularly hard and abrasive coatings.

Note: Unsure which drum? Galeski advises: galeski.shop/en/contact/

  2. Connect the dust extractor

Milling is done dry only and only with a suitable vacuum cleaner connected. The guard with flexible extraction hose and connector comes with the machine. To go with it: Dustcleaner 300 (dust class M) or Dustcleaner 200 (dust class H with HEPA filter).

Note: Both Dustcleaners have an automatic power tool socket: the vacuum starts and stops with the machine.

  3. Set the depth, mill the area in passes

Working depth 0–10 mm (ATLAS Pro 82 BL: 0–8 mm), 82 mm per pass. The ATLAS Max 82 BL runs at a constant 6,400 rpm with high torque for dense, hard and tough-elastic materials. The drum rotation throws the milled material straight towards the extraction.

  4. Where compressed air is available

In workshops and halls with a compressed-air supply, the Air ATLAS Pro and Air ATLAS Max work without electricity at the machine: 3.2 kg, quiet thanks to the silencer, 0–10 mm working depth, air consumption max. 20 l/s.

  5. Edges and junctions

On the ATLAS Max 82 you adjust the machine body up to 150° to the milling drum during work, continuously or in 12 detent positions; on the ATLAS Max 82 BL almost continuously to beyond vertical. In the Manufaktur video: “precise edge work” right into the corner.

Which ATLAS for epoxy and PU?

All three mill 82 mm wide and 0–10 mm deep with the same ATLAS milling drums. They differ in drive, speed and weight.

Frequently asked questions

Can an epoxy floor coating be removed?

Yes, mechanically by milling. The ATLAS drum milling machines remove coatings dry at an adjustable depth, 0–10 mm per pass. In the Galeski Manufaktur video the ATLAS MAX 82 mills epoxy and PU coating.

Which milling drum for epoxy or PU coating?

It depends on the thickness and hardness of the layer: Diamond Blue for coatings under 2 mm, Hybrid Grey and PCD Black for coatings under and over 2 mm, PCD Black for particularly hard and abrasive coatings. If in doubt, Galeski advises on the choice of drum: galeski.shop/en/contact/

Mill or grind?

When milling, the depth setting determines the removal, not the contact pressure as with grinding. Tough-elastic layers are peeled off instead of smeared.

Does it also work without electricity at the machine?

Yes, with the Air ATLAS Pro or Air ATLAS Max running purely on compressed air: 900 W power output at max. 20 l/s air consumption, 5,400 rpm, 0–10 mm working depth.

Can I mill wet to reduce dust?

No. The ATLAS drum milling machines and milling drums are intended for dry use only. The dust is captured right at the milling drum with a vacuum cleaner connected.
