Polishing a window sill’s cut edge: guided at a right angle, through to the gloss

After shortening, the end edge is rough from the saw, while the other edges come polished from the factory. The edge polisher guides the pad on a base plate at a right angle to the edge: wet with the Polifox KP, dry with the Genius KP – for slabs up to 30 mm (KP80) or 50 mm (KP100).

What matters here

  • Freehand, the edge turns rounded

With an angle grinder and velcro pads only your hand guides the tool. On a 2 or 3 cm slab the pad tilts easily – the edge turns rounded and the corners to the polished top wear away.

  • A matt edge next to the polished factory edge

The new cut edge sits right next to edges that were polished in the factory. Any difference in angle or gloss shows at the window in raking light.

  • The polished top has to stay intact

While polishing the edge, the machine rests on the finished surface. Whatever touches it must not leave marks.

Step by step

  1. Cut straight

The straighter the cut, the less the edge has to remove. Loose sills are cut by the Smart Cutter 1700 Plus along the rail, installed ones by the Dominator 180 right up to the reveal.

  2. Base plate and holder by slab thickness

KP80 with aluminium holder Ø 80 mm for slab thicknesses up to 30 mm, KP100 with Ø 100 mm up to 50 mm. For the polished top, the felt pad goes on the aluminium base plate; for rough surfaces, the velcro plastic plate.

  3. Wet: water and safety switch

The Polifox KP never runs without a water supply: a 2.5 m water hose with brass quick coupling and the splash guard are included. It runs with a PRCD safety switch at any socket or with a CEE plug on the TT 2602 isolating transformer.

Note: Where no water may reach the sill, the Genius KP polishes dry – with the same holder sizes and GADIA Easy Dry pads.

  4. From coarse to high gloss

One hand holds the base plate on the surface by the ball grip, the other guides the machine along the edge by the D-handle. GADIA Resin Premium in Ø 80 or 100 mm go in graded grits from coarse grinding to a high-gloss polish, dry GADIA Easy Dry. Set the speed in 7 settings A–G to suit the tool and polishing step.

  5. Profiled front edge

The KP edge polishers are built for straight 90° edges. If the front edge is rounded or profiled, the Contour Cat mills, grinds and polishes it wet, with height adjustment up to 25 mm and grinding height up to 60 mm.

Frequently asked questions

Can the cut edge of a granite window sill be polished back to a gloss?

Yes. The Polifox KP and Genius KP are built for straight, precisely square 90° edges on marble, granite and engineered stone; with GADIA Resin Premium you go in graded grits from coarse grinding to a high-gloss polish.

Polish wet or dry?

Wet with the Polifox KP, which only runs with a water supply and needs a PRCD safety switch or an isolating transformer. Dry with the Genius KP and GADIA Easy Dry pads where no water should reach the sill.

KP80 or KP100?

With the Ø 80 mm aluminium holder (KP80) you work slabs up to 30 mm thick, with Ø 100 mm (KP100) up to 50 mm.

Which pads fit?

For the Polifox KP the GADIA Resin Premium for wet grinding, for the Genius KP the GADIA Easy Dry for dry grinding – each in Ø 80 or 100 mm.

And if the front edge is rounded or chamfered?

The KP edge polishers are designed for straight 90° edges. Profiles you mill, grind and polish with the Contour Cat – profile cutters up to Ø 118 mm, plus the GADIA Cyli Set in grit sequence.
