Refurbishing stone stairs: grind tread by tread – then choose deliberately between polished and honed

Wear paths, scratches, dull spots – and indoors no grinding slurry should run down over the nosings. The Genius 1600 dry polisher holds its speed in 7 settings A–G even under pressure, combined with GADIA Easy Dry pads; outdoors the POLIFOX grinds wet.

What matters here

  • Water in the stairwell

Wet grinding binds the dust, but on an indoor staircase the slurry runs down step by step – over walls, railings and adjacent floors. In occupied buildings a dry polisher is often the only practical choice.

  • Large machines do not fit on the tread

A tread is narrow, the next riser is right behind it and the wall at the side. Floor grinding machines built for open areas hardly reach the edges here – the work is done with hand-held polishers that hold speed and finish even in the corner.

  • Many treads in a row

A staircase means many treads in a row, each through the same grit sequence. Vibration and a speed that drops under pressure take their toll on hand and result.

Step by step

  1. Work dry or wet

Work dry with GENIUS and GADIA Easy Dry, outdoors or where water may drain off also wet with POLIFOX and GADIA Resin Premium.

  2. Grind out wear paths and scratches

The Genius 1600 keeps 800–3,600 rpm electronically constant, even under strong pressure, and takes tools up to Ø 150 mm. Outdoors, grinding can be done wet with the Polifox 1700.

  3. Work through the grits

GADIA Easy Dry comes for dry grinding in Ø 80, 100 and 125 mm, on velcro holders. GADIA Antishock dampens vibration – easier on hand and machine over many treads in a row.

  4. Decide the final grit: gloss or honed

With GADIA Easy Dry in graded grits, you decide where the staircase ends up: at a fine honed finish or at the polish.

  5. Corners, edges and nosings

At the wall junction and the riser a small machine has the edge: the Genius 900 weighs 2.0 kg and takes tools up to Ø 115 mm. Polish the nosing square with the Genius KP edge polisher wherever it is freely accessible.

Which dry polisher for the stairs?

All four polish dry with an M14 spindle thread – CON at fixed speed, VARIO in 7 settings A–G.

Frequently asked questions

Can a marble staircase be ground down?

Yes – dry with GENIUS and GADIA Easy Dry in graded grits, outdoors also wet with POLIFOX and GADIA Resin Premium.

Wet or dry on the stairs?

Which machine for stair treads?

A hand-held polisher with stable speed. The Genius 1600 (1,590 W, 2.9 kg, tools up to Ø 150 mm) for the treads, the Genius 900 (890 W, 2.0 kg, up to Ø 115 mm) for corners and wall junctions.

Which pad size fits which GENIUS?

GADIA Easy Dry Ø 80 and 100 mm fit the Genius 900, 1400, 1600, 1700, 1802 and Genius KP; Ø 125 mm fits the Genius 1400, 1600, 1700 and 1802.
