Milling, profiling and polishing natural stone stair edges – in the workshop and on the installed staircase

Every step has the same front edge, and on the staircase you see them all stacked above each other. The Contour Cat KS 80 rests with its base plate on the tread and guides the tool along the edge at a fixed height – milling, profiling, grinding and polishing wet with one machine, at the workbench as well as on the installed step.

What matters here

  • One edge, many steps

Chamfer or profile have to look the same on the first and on the last step – across the full width of the step. Seen from below, all edges line up, and every deviation in height shows.

  • Polished tread right next to it

While working, the machine rests on the finished tread. It should glide steadily there without scratching the polish – and in the end the edge should have the same gloss as the tread.

  • On site there is no workshop

On an installed staircase there is often neither an isolating transformer nor a water connection within reach. The work still has to be wet – water cools the tool and binds the grinding dust.

Step by step

  1. Power and water: workshop or site

The Contour Cat comes with a PRCD safety switch (DI) for any socket at changing work sites, or with a CEE plug for the TT 2602 isolating transformer in the workshop. Without a water connection, the portable 10-litre pressure tank supplies the machine.

  2. Set the height, mill the edge

The heavy felt base plate rests on the tread, the stepless height adjustment up to 25 mm sets where the tool meets the edge – the same on every step. It grinds up to 60 mm high and takes profile cutters up to Ø 118 mm. For narrow 45° chamfers up to 5 mm there is GADIA Edge 45°.

  3. Grind through the grits

GADIA Cyli for granite and marble in 4 cm and 6 cm: G50, G100, R200, R400, R800 – according to the manufacturer for precisely square stone edges. The KS 80 runs at 1,700–6,800 rpm in 7 speed settings A–G.

  4. Polish to the gloss of the tread

With R1500, R3000 and the polisher on the GADIA Oscillator: the vertical stroke added to the rotation produces sinusoidal grinding movements – for a streak-free polish, according to the shop also on curved stone edges such as winding or curved steps.

KS 80 or KS 80 BL for the stairs?

Both work wet only, with grinding height up to 60 mm, height adjustment up to 25 mm and the same GADIA tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Contour Cat intended for stairs?

Yes. According to the manufacturer it is an edge processing system for grinding, milling and polishing edges on washbasins, stairs, tables, counters and the like in marble, granite and ceramics – only with water supply.

Can I work the edge on an installed staircase?

Yes, the base plate rests on the tread. The PRCD (DI) version runs at any socket, and without a water connection the 10-litre pressure tank (max. 6 bar, with 3 m hose) supplies the water.

Chamfer, rounding or profile – what is possible?

The tool determines the shape: the Contour Cat takes profile cutters up to Ø 118 mm, the height adjustment up to 25 mm sets the profile. For 45° chamfers up to 5 mm wide there is GADIA Edge 45°, for straight, square edges GADIA Cyli.

How thick can the step be?

The Contour Cat grinds up to 60 mm high. GADIA Cyli for granite and marble come in 4 cm and 6 cm. For straight 90° edges on steps up to 50 mm there are also the Polifox KP and Genius KP edge polishers.

Also for curved steps?

According to the manufacturer, the GADIA Oscillator allows a streak-free polish also on curved stone edges. It fits the Contour Cat KS 80 and the KS 80 BL.
