Removing tile adhesive: mill the residues off the screed – at an adjustable depth

The tiles are off – what remains are adhesive ridges and filler residues on the screed. A drum milling machine peels the adhesive bed off at an adjustable working depth of up to 10 mm, 82 mm wide per pass, and throws the milled material straight towards the extraction.

What matters here

  • Chiselling: no defined depth

With a chisel or chipping hammer the adhesive breaks off in pieces – in places together with the screed, elsewhere it stays put. The surface does not end up level, and broken-out spots have to be filled before the new covering.

  • Grinding: tough adhesive smears

An angle grinder with a cup wheel removes freehand, without a defined depth; tough-elastic adhesives tend to smear rather than come off. The drum milling principle peels them off.

  • Dust: created right at the adhesive bed

Removing adhesive and levelling compound creates fine mineral dust. Without extraction at the machine, it spreads throughout the building.

Step by step

  1. Identify adhesive and substrate, choose the milling drum

The drum's bond has to suit the covering: Hybrid Grey (hard bond, hybrid segments and PCD grit) for coatings, sealants and adhesive residues; PCD Black with 14 PCD cutting edges for hard coatings and sealants – peel off instead of grinding. If there is a thin coating under 2 mm beneath the adhesive, Diamond Blue with a soft bond fits.

Note: Drum first, then machine: all ATLAS milling drums have an 82 mm working width and are made for the ATLAS drum milling machines.

  2. Connect the dust extractor

According to the safety information, milling is done dry only and only with a suitable vacuum cleaner with a matching filter connected. A guard with flexible extraction hose and a vacuum cleaner connector are included. To go with it: Dustcleaner 300 (dust class M) or Dustcleaner 200 (dust class H with HEPA filter).

Note: Both Dustcleaners have an automatic power tool socket: the vacuum starts and stops with the machine.

  3. Set the working depth and mill in passes

The working depth is set on the machine – 0–10 mm on the ATLAS Max 82 BL and ATLAS Max 82, 0–8 mm on the ATLAS Pro 82 BL. Milling is done in 82 mm wide passes. The drum rotation throws the milled material straight towards the extraction.

  4. Edge zones and wall junctions

On the ATLAS Max 82 the machine body can be adjusted up to 150° to the milling drum during work, continuously or in 12 detent positions. On the ATLAS Max 82 BL it goes almost continuously to beyond vertical – for areas close to edges.

  5. Vacuum the surface

Finally, vacuum the surface with the extractor. The Dustcleaner 300 comes with a 4 m hose Ø 38 mm, hand tube, two extension tubes and floor nozzle; the automatic filter cleaning keeps the suction power consistent.

Which ATLAS for tile adhesive?

All three mill 82 mm wide with the same ATLAS milling drums. The difference: depth, motor, weight and how close you get to the wall.

Comparison on the same wall: milled on the left, ground on the right

Milled or ground – the same substrate compared

Left, milled with the ATLAS: removed evenly, open-pored and keyed for the new build-up. Right, ground: swirls and grinding marks, the layer is smeared rather than removed. Still from the Galeski Manufaktur video on the ATLAS MAX 82.

Frequently asked questions

Which machine removes tile adhesive from screed?

A drum milling machine such as the ATLAS: it removes tile adhesive, levelling compounds, coatings and adhesive residues dry at an adjustable depth – 82 mm working width, 0–10 mm working depth (ATLAS Pro 82 BL: 0–8 mm).

Mill or grind tile adhesive?

For thick and tough-elastic adhesives, mill: the drum milling principle peels them off at a defined depth instead of smearing them. With the PCD milling drum you peel off instead of grinding.

Which milling drum do I use for tile adhesive?

For adhesive residues the ATLAS Milling Drum Hybrid Grey (hard bond), for hard coatings and sealants the PCD Black. If the screed itself has to be removed, Diamond Red with a medium bond is made for concrete, old concrete and screed.

Can I work with water to reduce dust?

No. The ATLAS drum milling machines are intended for dry use only. The dust is captured right at the milling drum with a vacuum cleaner connected.

Can I get up to the wall with the milling machine?

Yes. On the ATLAS Max 82 you adjust the machine body up to 150° to the milling drum during work, on the ATLAS Max 82 BL to beyond vertical – for areas close to walls and edges.

What protective equipment do I need?

According to the safety information, personal protective equipment must be worn during operation – on the ATLAS Max 82 safety goggles, a dust mask and hearing protection. The ATLAS drum milling machines are intended for professional use by trained personnel.
