Polishing a worktop edge: guided, wet and through a complete grit sequence

The visible edge is where the customer looks first – scratches, waves or a different gloss from the surface show at once. The Contour Cat mills, grinds and polishes the edge wet and guided at an exact height; with the GADIA Cyli Set and the GADIA Oscillator you work from G50 through to the polisher.

What matters here

  • Freehand, the edge does not stay square

With an angle grinder and velcro pads, only your hand guides the tool. The edge turns slightly rounded and chamfers vary in width.

  • Gloss difference between edge and surface

The surface arrives factory-polished, the edge is your work. According to the BIV guideline, visible edges can show “differences in the look of the surface” because they are processed differently – in texture and gloss1.

  • Dry grinding engineered stone means fine quartz dust

Dry grinding of engineered quartz without extraction produces fine dust containing quartz. Bound by water, it stays in the slurry.

Step by step

  1. Prepare the machine: water first

The Contour Cat only works with a water supply. According to the operating instructions, always open the water before switching on – running dry, the work spindle burns the sealing rings. It runs with a PRCD safety switch or via the isolating transformer (CEE version).

Note: Blow out the felt on the base plate after each job and renew it when heavily soiled – that avoids scratches on the polished surface.

  2. Pre-milling with G50 and G100

The GADIA Cyli G50 roughing cylinder removes unevenness and angle errors. Use the height adjustment to align it with the slab thickness so the milling coating covers the whole edge in every position, and work with even left-right movements. Finish briefly with G100. Speed as per the instructions: setting 6 (KS 80 BL) or G (KS 80).

  3. Grinding R200 to R3000 – or Q200 to Q3000

Now through the grit sequence: R200, R400, R800, R1500, R3000 for granite and marble, Q200 to Q3000 for engineered stone. Speed setting 4 (KS 80 BL) or C (KS 80), with enough water that no dust forms. The GADIA Oscillator adds a vertical stroke to the rotation – according to its instructions about 10–20 times a minute by 5 mm, depending on the contact pressure. Even pressure gives an even stroke.

Note: R200 and R400 remove a lot – do not work with them for too long. On 2–3 cm slabs alternate between the upper and lower area of the grinding coating so it wears evenly.

  4. Polishing with little water

Finally the Cyli polisher: setting 2 (KS 80 BL) or B (KS 80), minimal water. With the Oscillator the grinding movement becomes sinusoidal – for a streak-free polish, also on curved stone edges, and exactly square edges.

Which machine for your edges?

The Contour Cat is the edge system for milling, profiling, grinding and polishing; for straight 90° edges there is the compact wet edge polisher.

Natural stone worktop with a polished visible edge

The edge has to match the surface

Polished stone surfaces show every deviation in gloss – most clearly on the continuous visible edge of an island or counter. With the Contour Cat, Cyli cylinders and Oscillator, the edge goes through the same complete grit sequence as the surface.

Frequently asked questions

Which grit sequence do I need for a granite edge?

The GADIA Cyli Set for granite and marble contains one each of G50, G100, R200, R400, R800, R1500, R3000 and the polisher – in 4 cm and 6 cm versions. G50/G100 pre-mill, R200 to R3000 grind, the polisher brings the gloss.

Can I polish engineered stone like granite?

Engineered quartz has its own grit sequence: the Cyli Set “4 cm Engineered Stone” contains Q200, Q400, Q800, Q1500, Q3000 and the polisher. It is also worked wet on the Contour Cat.

Where do streaks on the polished edge come from?

A purely rotating grinding tool easily leaves marks on dark, polished edges. The patented GADIA Oscillator adds a vertical stroke to the rotation, creating sinusoidal grinding movements for a streak-free polish. It was developed for the Contour Cat KS 80 and also fits the KS 80 BL.

Can I use the Contour Cat dry?

No. Both Contour Cat models are not suitable for dry work – only with a water supply. Water reaches the tool from inside and outside, metered via the water regulating valve.

How thick can the worktop be?

The Contour Cat grinds up to 60 mm high, the height adjustment goes up to 25 mm. The Polifox KP wet edge polisher handles straight edges up to 30 mm (KP80) or 50 mm (KP100) slab thickness.
