Repolishing a marble vanity top: grind out dull spots on site and polish again

Limescale calls for acid, marble cannot take it – at the vanity top both meet on the same surface. The Polifox 900 grinds and polishes wet with 2.3 kg and tools up to Ø 100 mm right on the fitted vanity top; where no water should run, the Genius 900 works dry with GADIA Easy Dry.

What matters here

  • Limescale versus acid-sensitive stone

Tap water reaches the vanity top every day, and acid cleaners are the usual answer to limescale. The BIV guideline is clear: “limestones and acid-sensitive stones should not be cleaned with acid”1. Where it has happened anyway, dull spots remain.

  • Damaged surface, not dirt

Dull etch marks are in the stone, not on it. The gloss comes back when the spot is ground out and repolished through a complete grit sequence – without leaving a margin in the gloss against the rest of the surface.

  • Fitted, between basin and tap

On site you work between basin, tap, wall and joint, often above a wooden vanity unit. What you need is a small machine with finely adjustable water – or one that polishes without water at all.

Step by step

  1. Connect the Polifox 900

The version with a PRCD safety switch runs from any socket, the CEE version on the TT 2602 isolating transformer. The water quantity can be finely adjusted even while polishing; the fitted splash guard keeps moisture and dirt away from the motor.

  2. Grind out the dull spots

GADIA Resin Premium sits on the GADIA Antishock velcro holder (M14), which noticeably reduces vibration. The pads come in Ø 80, 100 and 125 mm; Ø 80 and Ø 100 mm fit the Polifox 900 – Ø 80 mm for the tight spots by the basin and tap.

  3. Through the grit sequence to the gloss

With the graded grits of GADIA Resin Premium you go from coarse grinding to a high-gloss polish. The Polifox 900 VARIO runs at 800–3,600 rpm in 7 speed settings A–G, adjustable while polishing; the CON runs at a constant 3,400 rpm.

  4. Without water: Genius 900 with GADIA Easy Dry

Where no water should run at the vanity top, polish dry: the Genius 900 weighs 2 kg and takes tools up to Ø 115 mm. GADIA Easy Dry is designed for grinding without water cooling, in Ø 80, 100 and 125 mm – according to the manufacturer with very good colour depth on natural stone.

Wet or dry at the vanity top?

All three take GADIA pads on M14. Wet, the water cools tool and stone and binds the grinding dust; dry, the vanity unit stays dry.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get dull spots out of a marble vanity top?

By grinding them out and repolishing through the grit sequence: wet with the Polifox 900 and GADIA Resin Premium from coarse grinding to a high-gloss polish, or dry with the Genius 900 and GADIA Easy Dry.

Can I polish the vanity top while it is fitted?

Yes. The Polifox 900 with PRCD runs from any socket and you fine-tune the water, even while polishing. The Genius 900 with GADIA Easy Dry works without any water.

Polish wet or dry?

Wet, the water cools tool and stone and binds the dust – that is what the POLIFOX is built for. The GENIUS works dry with GADIA Easy Dry pads on the velcro holder, with no water at all.

Which pad size fits?

The Polifox 900 takes tools up to Ø 100 mm, so GADIA Resin Premium in Ø 80 or 100 mm. The Genius 900 takes up to Ø 115 mm; GADIA Easy Dry fits in Ø 80 and 100 mm.

What should the marble be cleaned with afterwards?

According to the BIV guideline, for soft stones “acid cleaners with a pH below 7.0 are generally not suitable”1; daily cleaning there uses residue-free maintenance cleaners with a pH of 7.0 to 10.5.
