Fitting sink and hob flush: recess and chamfer the cut-out edge wet

A flush fit depends on an evenly deep recess all around the cut-out. GADIA Router recesses the edge wet on the Contour Cat, with recesses up to 20 mm wide; GADIA Edge 45° chamfers the top and bottom edge of the cut-out without you turning the slab.

What matters here

  • Without guidance the depth varies

Working the recess freehand with an angle grinder or wood router gives you no reference for an even depth on stone. If the rim stands proud in one place or sits lower in another, the appliance is no longer flush – and the error only shows when it is fitted.

  • Turning the slab for the bottom chamfer

The cut-out creates webs “at risk of breaking”; the BIV guideline calls for a minimum web width of 50 mm1. Turning a large worktop with a cut-out just for the bottom chamfer is hard work and a breakage risk.

  • Narrow chamfers at the cut-out

The chamfers on the top and bottom edge of the cut-out are often only a few millimetres wide and have to run evenly all the way round. Freehand with a small grinding tool, their width easily varies.

Step by step

  1. Dimensions from the installation plan

Cut-out, recess and joint width are given in the sink or hob manufacturer’s installation plan – set the cut-out and the GADIA Router milling depth accordingly.

  2. Cut the cut-out

Cut the straight sides of the cut-out wet and guided with the Wetcut 180 on the GADIA Line guide rail – three red markers show the cutting line and cut edges even when the blade is covered. For cut-outs with a PGS 50, PGS 60 or SHARKY, diamond jigsaw blades are still available.

  3. Recess the edge with GADIA Router

GADIA Router is an end mill system for recessing edges: shank with guide ring (M14 female x M10 female) and plunge cutter Ø 20/16 x 7 mm. Recesses up to 20 mm wide are made easily and accurately – wet, on the Contour Cat KS 80 or KS 80 BL. Set the depth according to the appliance’s installation drawing.

  4. Top and bottom chamfer without turning

GADIA Edge 45° mills 45° chamfers on the top and bottom of the cut-out without turning the workpiece over – particularly suitable for chamfers up to 5 mm wide. First the coarse cutter (G50), then the fine one (G100); three guide ring sizes make best use of the grinding surface on narrow chamfers, the central water feed keeps a clear view of the edge.

  5. Polish visible cut-out edges

If the cut-out edge stays visible, for example with an undermount sink, polish it with the Contour Cat and GADIA Cyli through the grit sequence – according to the operating instructions the Contour Cat is particularly suited to polishing washbasins, stairs, tables and counters.

Router and Edge 45° run on the Contour Cat

Both GADIA systems fit the Contour Cat KS 80 and KS 80 BL. Which machine you choose depends on the motor.

Undermount sink in a granite worktop

The cut-out shows the workshop

Undermounted, top-mounted or flush: around the sink and hob, the edge, chamfer and joint are in view and under the hand. Even chamfers and a recess of constant depth make the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Which worktops are suitable for flush mounting?

Solid natural stone and engineered quartz slabs that a recess can be milled into. Whether a particular appliance is approved for flush mounting is stated in its installation instructions.

How wide can the GADIA Router recess?

Recesses up to 20 mm wide. The plunge cutter measures Ø 20/16 x 7 mm with an M10 male connection thread; the set contains the shank with guide ring and the plunge cutter. It works wet.

Which machine do I need?

GADIA Router and GADIA Edge 45° are made for the Contour Cat KS 80 and the Contour Cat KS 80 BL. With the CEE plug you also need the TT 2602 isolating transformer; the DI version has a PRCD safety switch.

Do I have to turn the slab for the bottom chamfer?

No. With GADIA Edge 45° you mill 45° chamfers on the bottom and top of cut-outs without turning the workpiece over. The set contains the M14 tool holder, three guide rings and the coarse (G50) and fine (G100) cutters.
