Milling off coatings: choose the milling drum to suit the layer – and remove it with little dust

Whether floor coating, sealant, old paint or plaster: before the new build-up can start, the old layer has to come off – evenly and without tearing up the substrate. The bond of the milling drum is decisive; the ATLAS drum milling machine then removes at an adjustable depth and guides the milled material straight to the extraction.

What matters here

  • Abrasives clog

Paints and soft coatings quickly clog sandpaper and grinding discs. On large areas you end up changing abrasives more than removing material.

  • Freehand without a defined depth

With an angle grinder or chipping hammer there is no set removal depth. The result is hollows, residues left standing and a substrate that has to be levelled again before the new build-up.

  • Dust class M is mandatory

For hand-held plaster milling machines and grinders, TRGS 500 requires dust extractors “of at least dust class M …, as far as technically possible”1. Extraction belongs at the machine.

Step by step

  1. Identify the layer, choose the bond

Diamond Blue (soft bond) for coatings under 2 mm and mineral floors. Hybrid Grey (hard bond, hybrid segments and PCD grit) for coatings, sealants and adhesive residues. PCD Black with 14 PCD cutting edges for hard coatings, sealants and industrial floors. Diamond Red (medium bond) for concrete, old concrete and screed.

Note: All drums: 82 mm working width, dry only, for the ATLAS drum milling machines.

  2. Choose the drive: electric or compressed air

ATLAS Max 82 (1,790 W) and ATLAS Max 82 BL (1,400 W, brushless) run on 230 V. Where compressed air is available, the Air ATLAS Pro and Air ATLAS Max work without electricity at the machine – 3.2 kg, quiet thanks to the silencer, air consumption max. 20 l/s.

  3. Connect the dust extractor

The guard with extraction hose and connector takes the dust away at the drum – connected to a dust class M extractor (Dustcleaner 300) or class H with HEPA filter (Dustcleaner 200). With a vacuum cleaner, the Air ATLAS machines work with very little dust by design.

  4. Set the depth, mill the area in passes

Working depth 0–10 mm (ATLAS Pro 82 BL: 0–8 mm), 82 mm per pass. The drum rotation throws the removed material straight towards the extraction. Tough-elastic layers are peeled off, not smeared.

  5. Edges and junctions

On the ATLAS Max 82 and Air ATLAS Max the machine body can be adjusted up to 150° during work, continuously or in 12 detent positions – close to walls and floors, pulling or pushing (Air ATLAS Max).

Four drum milling machines, one working width

All four mill 82 mm wide and 0–10 mm deep with the same ATLAS milling drums. They differ in their drive.

ATLAS MAX 82 milling a clean strip into a dark epoxy floor coating

Coating milled off – strip by strip, 82 mm wide

The ATLAS MAX 82 on an epoxy floor coating: the drum removes the layer at the set milling depth, and the milled material goes straight into the extraction. In the Manufaktur video also on PU coating, stone carpet and car park coating (OS 11).

Frequently asked questions

Which milling drum for which coating?

Thin coatings under 2 mm: Diamond Blue. Coatings, sealants, adhesive residues: Hybrid Grey. Hard coatings, sealants, industrial floors: PCD Black. Concrete, old concrete, screed: Diamond Red. Grooving in concrete and mineral floors: Diamond Rib Form.

How thick can the layer be?

The working depth is adjustable: 0–10 mm on the ATLAS Max 82, ATLAS Max 82 BL, Air ATLAS Pro and Air ATLAS Max, 0–8 mm on the ATLAS Pro 82 BL.

Can I also mill off paint and plaster?

Yes. The ATLAS drum milling machines are made for coatings, levelling compounds, adhesives, paints and plaster. Not suitable: wet work and (ATLAS Max 82) metalworking.

Electric or compressed air – which is better?

It depends on the site. The Air ATLAS machines run purely on compressed air with no electricity at the machine, weigh 3.2 kg and are quiet thanks to the silencer; they need up to 20 l/s of air. The electric ATLAS machines deliver 1,400 to 1,790 W on 230 V.

Do all milling drums fit every ATLAS?

The ATLAS milling drums have an 82 mm working width and are made for the ATLAS drum milling machines (tool Ø max. 98 mm, M14 spindle thread). The ATLAS Max 82 is operated exclusively with ATLAS milling drums.
