Undermount basin cut-out: polish and chamfer the edge wet, curves included

With an undermount basin, the cut-out edge stays a visible edge all the way round – oval, round or with small corner radii. The manufacturer describes the Contour Cat KS 80 BL as particularly suited to polishing washbasins in marble, granite and ceramics; with GADIA Cyli and the Oscillator the edge comes out streak-free even on curves, and GADIA Edge 45° chamfers it top and bottom without turning the slab.

What matters here

  • Visible edge all the way round

The basin sits under the slab and the cut-out edge is exposed – right above the basin, in view every time someone washes their hands. Gloss and angle have to match the polished surface, all the way round.

  • Curves instead of straight edges

Vanity cut-outs are oval, round or rectangular with corner radii. A purely rotating grinding tool easily leaves streaks on polished edges, and freehand the angle of the edge drifts on the curve.

  • Small radii in engineered stone and ceramics

For rectangular cut-outs in engineered stone and ceramics, the BIV worktop guideline calls for corners “with an inner radius ≥ 4 mm”1. Chamfer and polish then have to run through these tight corners too.

Step by step

  1. Cut the cut-out

Cut straight sides wet and guided with the Wetcut 180 on the GADIA Line guide rail. For curves, there are diamond jigsaw blades for cut-outs in marble, granite, sandstone and soapstone.

  2. Pre-mill the edge with G50 and G100

The GADIA Cyli G50 roughing cylinder removes unevenness and angle errors. According to the KS 80 BL operating instructions: speed control on 6, align the cutter with the slab thickness using the height adjustment so the milling coating covers the full thickness in every position, then finish briefly with G100.

  3. Chamfer top and bottom edge without turning

According to the manufacturer, GADIA Edge 45° mills edges with the smallest radii; 45° chamfers on the top and bottom of the cut-out are done without turning the slab over. Particularly suitable up to 5 mm chamfer width, first coarse (G50), then fine (G100); three guide ring sizes make use of the grinding surface on narrow chamfers.

  4. Grind and polish with the Oscillator

Speed control on 4, R200 to R3000 with enough water that no dust forms; for engineered stone Q200 to Q3000. Finally the Cyli polisher on setting 2 with minimal water. The GADIA Oscillator adds a vertical stroke to the rotation – for a streak-free polish even on curved stone edges.

Note: According to the instructions, R200 and R400 still remove a lot – do not work with them for too long.

Frequently asked questions

How do I polish the inside edge of a vanity cut-out?

Wet on the Contour Cat with the GADIA Cyli Set: G50 and G100 pre-mill, R200 to R3000 grind, the polisher brings the gloss. The GADIA Oscillator’s stroke gives a streak-free polish.

Does it work on oval and round cut-outs?

According to the manufacturer, the GADIA Oscillator gives a streak-free polish on curved stone edges as well, and GADIA Edge 45° mills edges with the smallest radii.

How do I chamfer the bottom edge of the cut-out?

With GADIA Edge 45° from above, without turning the slab over. The set contains the M14 tool holder, three guide rings and the coarse (G50) and fine (G100) cutters; it fits the Contour Cat KS 80 and KS 80 BL.

Which grits for engineered stone vanity tops?

The GADIA Cyli Set “4 cm Engineered Stone” contains one each of Q200, Q400, Q800, Q1500, Q3000 and the polisher. For granite and marble there are the 4 cm and 6 cm sets with G50 to R3000 and the polisher.

How thick can the vanity top be?

The Contour Cat grinds up to 60 mm high; the height adjustment goes up to 25 mm.
