Joining worktops flush at the butt joint: calibrate first, then groove and chip

At the joint the customer feels every millimetre: if one slab is thinner or sits higher, an edge remains – on the top and on the visible edge. GADIA Trim calibrates the slab thickness at the bottom edge, GADIA Connect mills groove pockets at an exact distance from the surface, and glued-in plastic chips hold both slabs at one height.

What matters here

  • Different slab thicknesses show on the edge

If two slabs differ in thickness, it shows at the joint. According to the BIV guideline, the thickness at the joint may differ by “max. 1.0 mm at the visible edge”1. Levelling only the top with wedges or packing moves the offset to the visible edge.

  • Grinding off an offset afterwards costs the polish

If one slab stands proud, the only fix is grinding – and with it a different gloss around the joint.

  • The profile has to run across the joint

Where an edge profile runs across a joint or corner, both slabs have to meet exactly in the profile. Any offset stays visible on the edge.

Step by step

  1. Saw the joint edges

Cut the joint edges straight and guided with the Wetcut 180 on the GADIA Line guide rail.

  2. Calibrate the slab thickness at the bottom edge

GADIA Trim machines stone bottom edges: inaccuracies in slab thickness at the joint edges are calibrated. Sets for 1–2 cm or 3–4 cm slab thickness; the cutting disc is not included.

  3. Mill groove pockets at an exact distance

With the GADIA Connect groove cutter set, mill groove pockets into both joint edges at an exact distance from the surface – with the guide running on top or underneath. Because both grooves are referenced from the surface, the tops sit at the same height after joining. Speed for the groove cutter as per the operating instructions: setting 6 (KS 80 BL) or G (KS 80).

  4. Glue in plastic chips, join the slabs

Then the plastic chips are glued into the groove pockets and the slabs are joined – creating a flush butt joint. Chips come in packs of 20 or 50.

  5. Fit corner joints to the profile

Corner joints that match the profile and are square are made with the GADIA Connect template and the GADIA Cyli milling system – so the edge profile continues across the joint.

Trim and Connect run on the Contour Cat

GADIA Trim and GADIA Connect fit the Contour Cat KS 80 and KS 80 BL – the same machine you use to mill and polish the visible edge.

Kitchen with an island and a natural stone worktop

Long runs need a joint

Continuous runs, islands and L-shaped kitchens are often longer than one raw slab. Then the joint decides whether the worktop looks like one piece.

Joint and calibration

Machine, groove cutter set with plastic chips and calibration set. For GADIA Trim you also need a cutting disc.

Frequently asked questions

Does the edge profile continue across the joint?

Yes. The GADIA Connect template and the GADIA Cyli milling system make corner joints that match the profile and are square. Both run on the Contour Cat KS 80 and KS 80 BL.

How much height offset is allowed at the joint?

On smooth surfaces no more than 1 mm on the top; at the visible edge the thickness at the joint may differ by no more than 1.0 mm1. GADIA Trim calibrates the slab thickness, GADIA Connect keeps both tops at one height via the grooves.

What does GADIA Connect include?

GADIA Connect is available as a groove cutter set (like the GADIA Disc set, matched to the plastic chips) and as plastic chips in packs of 20 or 50. It fits the Contour Cat KS 80 and KS 80 BL and is used wet.

Which slab thicknesses does GADIA Trim cover?

For 1–2 cm or 3–4 cm, depending on the set. Included: M14 x M8 adapter, guide ring, fitting screw and two support discs; the cutting disc is not included. Besides the joint, Trim also gives clean bottom edges on overhanging worktops and makes front cuts that reduce the visible edge thickness.
