Grind screed with little dust: floor grinder, a cup wheel made for screed and extraction at the hood

Before tiles, parquet or LVT, the screed surface is ground. A TORNADO floor grinder with brush ring hood, a cup grinding wheel for abrasive materials and a dust class M extractor make it a low-dust job.

What matters here

  • Dust in the room air

For dry grinding with hand-held power tools, extraction must meet at least dust class M2. An angle grinder without a sealing hood does not capture the dust where it is created.

  • A concrete wheel on screed

The GADIA cup wheels for concrete are “suitable” for screed, the wheels for abrasive materials “highly suitable”. With the matching wheel you grind screed without compromise.

  • Too much pressure, poor grinding result

According to the operating instructions, pressing too hard damages the machine, increases wheel wear and reduces grinding performance3. On a hand-held machine without a spring-loaded hood, the distance to the surface also varies – and the extraction with it.

Step by step

  1. Choose the cup wheel for the substrate

For screed and asphalt, the wheels for abrasive materials: Double-Cup Abrasiv Profi with a double-row grinding plate or Abrasiv-T-Cup with T-segmentation, “ideal for renovating screed floors”4. If the substrate is concrete, use the Double-Cup Profi or Rotor Cup.

  2. Connect the extractor to the hood

Hose to the extraction connection on the TORNADO hood, plug into the extractor's power socket: the Dustcleaner 300 (dust class M) starts and stops with the grinder and cleans its filter automatically. For the finest particles there is the Dustcleaner 200 with dust class H and HEPA filter.

Note: According to the wheel data, optimum removal is only possible with a suitable extraction system.

  3. Grind the open area with the front closed

On open areas, keep the front cover closed – according to the manual, this is the only way to ensure optimum dust extraction3. The hood sits on the surface with its brush ring, spring-loaded on the Tornado 125 Speed.

  4. Edge zones with the same machine

On the Tornado 125 Speed and Speed Eco, fold up the front section and grind right up to the wall – without switching to the angle grinder. Then close the front and carry on across the area.

Which TORNADO for screed?

All three grind dry with tools up to Ø 125 mm, and the GADIA cup wheels Ø 125 mm fit all three.

Pouring anhydrite flowing screed over underfloor heating

Flowing screed is in – now prepare the surface

Floor grinder, cup wheel and extractor work together: the GADIA Ø 125 mm cup wheels fit every TORNADO 125 and the Tornado Maxi BL, and the Dustcleaner starts with the grinder via its power socket.

Frequently asked questions

Does screed have to be ground before tiling?

For calcium sulphate screed, yes: according to the technical leaflet, the surfaces must always be ground to remove accumulated fine particles and achieve a good bond1. The screed and adhesive manufacturers' instructions also apply.

Which cup wheel do I use for screed?

Double-Cup Abrasiv Profi or Abrasiv-T-Cup – both are highly suitable for screed, asphalt and tile adhesive. The Abrasiv-T-Cup is premium quality, rated 4 of 5 for surface quality and speed; the Double-Cup Abrasiv Profi 3 of 5.

Do the GADIA cup wheels fit every TORNADO?

The GADIA cup wheels Ø 125 mm fit the Tornado 125 Maxi, Tornado Maxi BL, Tornado 125 Maxi Eco, Tornado 125 Speed and Tornado 125 Speed Eco. The wheels have a 22.2 mm bore.

Can I grind wet with the TORNADO?

No. The TORNADO floor grinders are built for dry grinding only; the dust is extracted at the hood.

Is an ordinary vacuum cleaner enough?

For dry grinding of materials containing quartz, extraction must meet at least dust class M2. The Dustcleaner 300 is dust class M with up to 4,500 l/min, the Dustcleaner 200 dust class H with HEPA filter and up to 3,240 l/min.

Constant or variable speed?

The Tornado 125 Maxi and Maxi Eco can be set in 7 settings A–G from 1,700 to 6,800 rpm, the Tornado Maxi BL in 6 settings from 1,600 to 6,400 rpm. The Tornado 125 Speed and Speed Eco run at a constant 9,500 rpm; the electronics readjust under load.
