What matters here

  • Reworking starts with stock removal

When a stone is reworked, lettering and weathered layers are ground off across the whole face. That takes a machine that keeps going during stock removal over a large area – a light hand polisher is built for the final gloss, not for stock removal.

  • The old lettering zone shows under raking light

Where the lettering was ground off, the scratches are deeper than on the rest of the face. Only a complete grit sequence across the whole face makes them disappear in the gloss.

  • Dry grinding means quartz dust

Dry grinding of granite produces fine dust containing quartz. Wet grinding binds it – with a machine that has water feed and protection for wet work.

Step by step

  1. Prepare machine and water

The POLIFOX works with a water hose and adjustable water flow – with a PRCD safety switch at any socket or with a CEE plug on the TT 2602 isolating transformer.

Note: Never run a POLIFOX dry: the machines are built only for work with water supply.

  2. Grind off lettering and weathering

For stock removal across the whole face, the Polifox 1802 with 1,800 W and fixed speed is built for continuous use with grinding stones; the Polifox 1700 delivers 1,750 W even in the lower speed range.

  3. Grind through the grit sequence

GADIA Resin Premium comes in graded grits for wet grinding, in Ø 80, 100 and 125 mm. The GADIA Antishock velcro holder with M14 dampens vibration.

  4. Polish to a gloss, edges last

The gloss is created in the fine grits. On the Polifox 1700 the electronics keep the chosen setting A–G constant, even under pressure – for an even surface. For flanks, edges and small areas the 2.3 kg Polifox 900 is handier.

Which wet polisher for the memorial workshop?

Frequently asked questions

Can a weathered gravestone be polished again?

Granite gravestones are ground and polished wet with a POLIFOX and GADIA Resin Premium – in graded grits from coarse grinding to a high-gloss polish.

How do you remove an old inscription from a gravestone?

By grinding the whole face with a coarse grit – continuously with the Polifox 1802 (1,800 W, constant 2,000 rpm) – then the full grit sequence with GADIA Resin Premium up to the polish.

Which machine for grinding down a gravestone?

A powerful wet polisher with water feed. The Polifox 1802 (1,800 W, constant 2,000 rpm, tools up to Ø 125 mm) is built for continuous use with grinding stones. The Polifox 1700 (1,750 W, 800–3,600 rpm in 7 settings A–G) covers grinding and polishing with one machine.

Can I polish the gravestone at the cemetery?

POLIFOX machines need water supply and power via PRCD, the CEE version needs the TT 2602 isolating transformer; AIR POLIFOX machines need compressed air. Whether water, power or a compressor may be used at the grave and where the grinding slurry may go is a matter for the cemetery administration.

Which pad size fits?

GADIA Resin Premium comes in Ø 80, 100 and 125 mm. The Polifox 900 and Polifox 1400 take tools up to Ø 100 mm, the Polifox 1700 and Polifox 1802 up to Ø 125 mm.
