Cutting installed tiles: cleanly right up to the wall, with extraction

The door frame does not fit, the skirting has to be shorter, a strip by the bath has to come out: cuts in tiles that are already laid nearly always end at a wall. The DOMINATOR dry saws cut right up to the wall – with extraction hood and vacuum connection, up to 30, 60 or 75 mm deep depending on the model.

What matters here

  • Angle grinder: head and guard in the way

The gear head and guard keep an angle grinder’s disc from reaching the wall – the remaining strip stays. Without extraction every cut spreads dust through the occupied room.

  • No way in for wet saws and tile cutters

A wet tile saw needs the tile on its table, a manual tile cutter only scores and snaps loose tiles. Neither can adjust a tile that is already laid – and water has no place in a finished room.

  • The cut edge stays visible

At the door frame, skirting or bath edge everyone sees the joint. A crooked cut with chipping can hardly be corrected once installed without putting neighbouring tiles at risk.

Step by step

  1. Plunge cuts: locate services

When the disc plunges into an existing wall, gas, water or electrical lines can cause kickback. The DOMINATOR operating instructions therefore call for particular care with plunge cuts and a check of the work area, e.g. with a metal detector.

  2. Set guard and blade for the wall cut

On the DOMINATOR you set the guard forwards or backwards in detent positions and place the blade with flange at the outer edge of the guard – this lets the cut reach the wall. The porcelain discs GADIA Multi-Cut and Ceram-Cut are available in Ø 125 mm in the version “with flange”.

  3. Connect the extraction

Connect the suction hose to the extraction port of the open guard: swivel joint, hose spacer and fixed hose guide keep it out of the cut. The Dominator 125 and 125 BL come with a 65 cm extraction hose (inner Ø 32 mm) and a cable-hose connector. At the other end: an M or H class dust extractor1.

Note: The Dustcleaner 300 and 200 have an automatic power socket – the vacuum starts and stops with the saw.

  4. Plunge in and cut

The electronics keep the speed up under load, and the plastic base surface protects the tile surface. The Dominator 125 and 125 BL cut up to 30 mm deep.

  5. Deeper cuts: steps and thick slabs

For natural stone, thick slabs or steps the DOMINATOR comes larger: the Dominator 180 with saw blades up to Ø 180 mm and up to 60 mm cutting depth, the Dominator 250 with 2,400 W, saw blades up to Ø 250 mm and 75 mm cutting depth – both also cut right up to the wall.

Which DOMINATOR for your cut?

All four are dry saws with vacuum connection and cut right up to the wall – they differ in cutting depth and motor.

Tradesman renovating a floor in an existing building

Adjusting in existing rooms

Once the floor is down, door frames, skirting and fittings follow – and with them the cuts at the wall. A dry saw with extraction makes them in the finished room.

Set-up for cutting installed tiles

Dry saw for cuts right up to the wall, diamond cutting disc for porcelain stoneware (Ø 125 mm, “with flange” for wall cuts) and an M class dust extractor.

Frequently asked questions

Can you cut tiles that are already installed?

Yes – with a dry saw that cuts right up to the wall and extracts the dust at the disc. The DOMINATOR series is built for this: cuts close to the wall in marble, granite, engineered stone, porcelain stoneware, ceramics, glass and sandstone.

How do I get the saw right up to the wall?

On the DOMINATOR the blade can be positioned centrally or, with a flange, at the outer edge of the guard; the guard can be set forwards or backwards in detent positions.

Which DOMINATOR for which cutting depth?

DOMINATOR 125 and 125 BL up to 30 mm, DOMINATOR 180 with saw blades up to Ø 180 mm up to 60 mm, DOMINATOR 250 with saw blades up to Ø 250 mm up to 75 mm.

Can I cut wet with the DOMINATOR?

No, the DOMINATOR is a dry saw only, with vacuum connection. If you want to cut wet and dry with one machine, the Duocut set has one motor with two guards: wet with splash guard or dry with extraction hood, also close to the wall.

Dominator 125 or 125 BL?

The 125 BL works with a brushless motor without carbon brushes (1,400 W, 6 speed settings 1–6) and restart cutout; when switched off, the magnetic motor brakes the disc quickly. The Dominator 125 has 1,500 W, 7 speed settings A–G and is also available in 115 V.

Does extraction always have to be connected?

Yes. According to the operating instructions, the guard must always be fitted for cutting and connected to an effective dust extraction. On construction sites, M or H class vacuums are intended for this1.
