Grinding right up to the wall: fold up the front and carry on with the same machine

The area is ground, a strip remains along the wall – and the covering needs the same substrate there as in the middle. On the Tornado 125 Speed and Speed Eco you fold up the front section of the extraction hood and grind the edge zone with the same machine and the same extraction.

What matters here

  • The large machine cannot reach the edge

Large floor grinders reach the corners and edges of a room poorly. So a second tool or sanding by hand follows – and the transitions between area and edge still have to be even.

  • Dust escapes at the edge

An angle grinder with a cup wheel has no sealing hood at the edge – the dust escapes exactly where the grinding happens right in front of the wall.

  • Two machines, two passes

First the area, then change tools, swap the hose, rework the edge – and every tool leaves its own grinding pattern.

Step by step

  1. Grind the area with the front closed

According to the operating instructions, the front cover must be closed when grinding surfaces without a boundary – only then is optimum dust extraction ensured1. The extractor is connected to the hood's extraction port.

  2. Switch off, fold up the front

Switch the machine off, squeeze the front cover at the recessed grips and fold it upwards1.

  3. Move to the wall and grind the edge

Move the machine with the opening to the wall, switch on and work the area close to the wall. This is the procedure the manual recommends to keep dust as low as possible when grinding near walls1.

Note: Same machine, same wheel, same extraction: no changeover for the edge.

  4. Close the front, carry on across the area

To continue on the open area, switch the machine off, fold the cover down and let it lock1.

Note: Worn brushes are replaced individually: they are only pressed lightly into the groove1.

Tornado 125 Speed or Speed Eco?

Both grind dry at a constant 9,500 rpm, and both have a fold-up front for work close to walls.

The edge decides

Where the covering meets the wall, it needs the same substrate as in the field – with the same machine, the same wheel and the same extraction.

Frequently asked questions

Which TORNADO models grind up to the wall?

The Tornado 125 Speed and Speed Eco have a fold-up front section, as do the Tornado 125 Maxi, Tornado 125 Ultra and Tornado Maxi BL. The GADIA cup wheels Ø 125 mm fit the Tornado 125 Speed, Speed Eco and Maxi Eco.

Why not grind with the front open all the time?

Because the hood only extracts optimally when closed. The operating instructions require the front cover to be closed on surfaces without a boundary1.

Do I need a different wheel for the edge?

No, you carry on with the mounted cup wheel. The Double-Cup Abrasiv Profi and Abrasiv-T-Cup are made for screed and asphalt, the Double-Cup Profi and Rotor Cup for concrete.

Can I grind wet with the Tornado 125 Speed?

No. The Tornado 125 Speed and Speed Eco are for dry grinding only; the dust goes through the hood into the extractor.

Which substrates does the Tornado 125 Speed grind?

Marble, granite, sandstone, engineered stone, porcelain stoneware, ceramics and glass, plus floor grinding and grinding close to the wall with tools up to Ø 125 mm2. For screed and concrete, the cup wheel makes the difference.
