Cutting porcelain tiles without a dust cloud: dry, with extraction right at the disc

Cut dry without extraction, the dust spreads through the whole room; cut wet, water and slurry stay on the site. The solution in between: a dry stone cutter with extraction hood on an M or H class dust extractor and a diamond cutting disc made for porcelain stoneware.

What matters here

  • Angle grinder without extraction

Cutting with an angle grinder and diamond disc without extraction releases the dust before any vacuum can reach it. Afterwards the room, the furniture and the other trades’ work have to be cleaned.

  • Wet tile saw: low dust, but wet

Wet cutting binds the dust. In return the wet tile saw needs water, a fixed position and room for the slurry, and every tile travels to the machine and back. It is not made for adjusting tiles that are already laid.

  • Manual tile cutter: straight breaks only

Scoring and snapping is low in dust, but only gives straight through-cuts. Notches, L-cuts, narrow strips and cuts in laid tiles are not possible, and with thick porcelain stoneware the break does not always follow the score line.

Step by step

  1. Choose a disc for porcelain stoneware

For porcelain stoneware use a diamond cutting disc with perforated core: GADIA Multi-Cut is designed for hard to very hard ceramic materials, with a turbo rim for cutting speed and precision. GADIA Ceram-Cut delivers the highest cut quality in porcelain stoneware and ceramics and is designed for continuous use in 2 cm porcelain patio slabs.

Note: For the Smart Cutter 125 BL, Smart Cutter 1500 and Dominator 125 you need Ø 125 mm – both discs are also available in this size “with flange”.

  2. Connect the dust extractor

The dust is captured at the disc: the Smart Cutter and Dominator have a guard with extraction port and vacuum cleaner connection. “On construction sites, only M and H class vacuums may be used, depending on the type of dust”1. The Dustcleaner 300 (dust class M, automatic filter cleaning) and Dustcleaner 200 (dust class H, HEPA filter) start together with the machine via their power socket.

Note: The swivel joint on the Smart Cutter’s vacuum connector (Ø 36–46 mm) prevents twisted hoses.

  3. Make straight cuts with a pulling cut

With the SMART CUTTER you place the guide edge, plunge in square and pull the cut through – dry, up to 20 mm (125 BL) or 25 mm (1500) deep. The Plus version has a removable guide plate with stepless cutting depth, a side stop for tile strips and a fitting for the GALESKI rail system.

Note: Rail base set 100 cm: with rubber lever suction cups for smooth surfaces, with vacuum suction holders (Venturi, compressed air) for rough ones.

  4. Adjustments and cuts at the wall

Where the tile is already laid or the cut has to go right up to the wall, the DOMINATOR cuts dry with extraction: guard adjustable forwards or backwards in detent positions, blade central or at the outer edge of the guard, suction hose kept out of the way by swivel joint and hose spacer. The plastic base surface protects the tile surface.

  5. Vacuum the surface

For the final clean-up, the Dustcleaner 300 vacuums wet and dry and comes with a 4 m hose Ø 38 mm, hand tube, two extension tubes and a floor nozzle.

Which dry cutter for porcelain stoneware?

All four cut porcelain stoneware, ceramics and natural stone dry with an extraction hood and vacuum connection – the choice depends on cutting depth and where you cut.

Frequently asked questions

Can porcelain tiles be cut dry?

Yes. The Smart Cutter and Dominator are dry cutters for marble, granite, engineered stone, porcelain stoneware, ceramics, glass and sandstone. They work dry only; the Dominator operating instructions require the guard to be fitted and dust extraction connected.

Which vacuum for cutting tiles?

An M or H class dust extractor1. The Dustcleaner 300 (M) delivers up to 4,500 l/min airflow and automatic filter cleaning, the Dustcleaner 200 (H) up to 3,240 l/min and a HEPA filter. Both start with the saw via their power socket.

How thick can the tile be?

The Smart Cutter 125 BL cuts up to 20 mm, the Smart Cutter 1500 up to 25 mm, the Dominator 125 up to 30 mm and the Smart Cutter 1700 Plus up to 40 mm – enough for 2 cm patio slabs as well.

Which disc cuts porcelain without chipping?

For tiles, ceramics and porcelain stoneware Galeski recommends the GADIA Multi-Cut. The highest cut quality comes from the GADIA Ceram-Cut with its closed turbo rim for very clean cut edges; Easy-Cut and Super-Cut are further discs for porcelain stoneware, ceramics and hard tiles.

Smart Cutter Eco or Plus?

The Plus versions have a removable guide plate – for setting the cutting depth and for the GALESKI rail system. The Eco has no guide plate and is particularly handy; the Smart Cutter 1500 Eco weighs 2.0 kg.

Smart Cutter or Dominator?

The Smart Cutter is built for straight, pulling cuts along the guide edge or on the rail. The Dominator cuts right up to the wall and up to 30 mm deep (Dominator 180: 60 mm, Dominator 250: 75 mm) – for adjustments to laid tiles.
