Fitting stone steps and polishing the nosing: cut close to the wall, guided square

After trimming, the step edge is rough at first – and it is the edge everyone looks at. DOMINATOR saws cut dry, also close to the wall; the Polifox KP and Genius KP edge polishers then guide the tool square on steps up to 50 mm thick; thicker steps and profiles are handled by the Contour Cat.

What matters here

  • Freehand, the edge turns wavy

Running freehand along the nosing with an angle grinder: the angle tilts, the edge becomes wavy and the corner gets rounded off unintentionally. On a step people look straight at while walking, every irregularity shows.

  • Trimming in place

In existing buildings there is usually a wall or stringer in the way, and water for wet cutting is often not available. A cutter without an extraction hood then leaves a cloud of dust throughout the stairwell.

  • Matt edge next to a polished tread

If the tread is polished, the new edge should reach the same gloss. With pads in graded grits on the edge polisher, you go up to the polish – or stop at a fine honed finish where the edge is meant to stay matt.

Step by step

  1. Cut the step to size – also close to the wall

The Dominator 180 cuts dry up to 60 mm deep, the Dominator 250 up to 75 mm, both also close to the wall and with a vacuum connection. For straight cuts on steps up to 40 mm thick, the Smart Cutter 1700 Plus with removable guide plate runs along the rail.

  2. Pre-grind the edge square

The edge polisher rests on the tread with its aluminium base plate, the motor sits in the 90° holder – the machine stays at right angles to the edge. KP80 for steps up to 30 mm, KP100 up to 50 mm. The Polifox KP works wet, the Genius KP dry.

Note: Use the felt pad on polished treads and the velcro plastic plate on rough ones.

  3. Polish up to the gloss of the tread

Grit by grit up to the gloss of the existing surface: wet with GADIA Resin Premium on the Polifox KP, dry with GADIA Easy Dry on the Genius KP – each in Ø 80 or 100 mm to match the aluminium plate.

  4. Thick block steps and profiles

For chamfers, roundings and steps over 50 mm, the Contour Cat guides the tool over its base plate: grinding height up to 60 mm, height adjustment up to 25 mm, profile cutters up to Ø 118 mm. With GADIA Cyli and the GADIA Oscillator you polish the edge streak-free.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trim an installed stone step?

With a saw that cuts close to the wall: the DOMINATOR models cut dry and also close to the wall, depending on the model 30 mm (Dominator 125), 60 mm (Dominator 180) or 75 mm (Dominator 250) deep, with a vacuum connection.

Up to which step thickness does the edge polisher fit?

KP80 up to 30 mm, KP100 up to 50 mm slab thickness – the same for the Polifox KP and Genius KP. For thicker steps use the Contour Cat with a grinding height up to 60 mm.

Wet or dry on the stairs?

In occupied stairwells usually dry with the Genius KP and GADIA Easy Dry. Where water is not a problem, wet with the Polifox KP and GADIA Resin Premium – it only runs with water supply, with PRCD or CEE plug for the isolating transformer.

Square edge, chamfer or rounding?

Polish straight 90° edges with the edge polisher, chamfers and profiles with the Contour Cat (profile cutters up to Ø 118 mm, grinding height up to 60 mm).
