Drilling a tap hole in granite and marble: wet, with a diamond core drill bit on the Joker

The tap hole sits right in the polished visible surface – and sometimes it only gets drilled once the vanity top is already fitted. The Joker Maxi drills water-cooled up to Ø 50 mm, the GADIA Core 80 Granite diamond core drill bit fits its M14 spindle thread; with a PRCD safety switch it runs from any socket.

What matters here

  • The core drill bit needs water

Diamond core drill bits for natural stone are made for wet drilling; according to its safety note, GADIA Core 80 Granite is only used with sufficient water cooling. On a machine without a water connection, the cooling has to come from outside – right over the polished surface.

  • Afterwards, in the finished bathroom

New tap, different hole layout: then the drilling happens in the fitted vanity top, with wall, mirror and vanity unit right next to it. What you need is a wet machine that runs safely from the socket on site and keeps the spray to itself.

  • The edge of the hole is in plain view

A rosette or tap base only covers a narrow margin. If the bit wanders when starting the hole or the edge chips, it stays visible on the polished surface.

Step by step

  1. Choose the diameter to suit the tap

The hole diameter is set by the tap’s data sheet. GADIA Core 80 Granite comes in Ø 6 to Ø 105 mm, including Ø 32, 35, 38 and 40 mm – with 80 mm drilling depth, R 1/2" male and M14 female connection.

  2. Machine by drill diameter

The Joker Easy drills up to Ø 35 mm and becomes a wet or dry machine via its interchangeable head – for the core drill bit, use the flush head for wet work. Joker Maxi and Joker Maxi BL drill wet up to Ø 50 mm. All three are listed as matching machines on the GADIA Core 80 Granite product page.

  3. Water first, then drill

Connect the water hose with the brass quick coupling, set the water quantity on the regulating valve and, as the operating instructions say, always open the water before switching on. The Joker Maxi’s 1,750 W deliver enough power for core drill bits even in the lower speed range; the splash guard holds back the spray.

  4. On site with PRCD, in the workshop on the isolating transformer

The version with a PRCD safety switch (DI) runs from any socket – for the tap hole added later in a fitted vanity top. The version with the CEE plug is run on the TT 2602 isolating transformer.

Which Joker for your tap hole?

All three take GADIA Core 80 Granite. The difference lies in the largest drill diameter, the motor and whether the machine also works dry.

Frequently asked questions

Which drill bit for a tap hole in granite?

A diamond core drill bit for wet drilling. GADIA Core 80 Granite drills natural stone up to 80 mm deep, in diameters from Ø 6 to Ø 105 mm, with R 1/2" male and M14 female connection.

Can I drill the tap hole into a vanity top that is already fitted?

With a wet machine that runs safely on site: Joker Maxi and Joker Easy are available with a PRCD safety switch for any socket. Water comes through the hose with brass quick coupling, the splash guard holds back the spray.

Does it work in marble too?

GADIA Core 80 Granite is designed for wet drilling in natural stone. The manufacturer lists the Joker Maxi for marble, granite, engineered stone, porcelain stoneware, ceramics, glass and sandstone.

What speed does the Joker run at when drilling?

The Joker Maxi covers 1,700–6,800 rpm in 7 speed settings A–G; its 1,750 W deliver enough power for core drill bits even in the lower speed range. The Joker Easy runs at 800–3,600 rpm, with constant-speed electronics holding the speed under load.

Can I grind and polish with the same machine?

Yes. The Joker Maxi drills up to Ø 50 mm and grinds and polishes with tools up to Ø 125 mm on M14 – for example with GADIA Resin Premium diamond pads on the velcro holder.
