Removing stone carpet: mill off stones and resin at a set depth

The stone carpet has to go, while the screed or waterproofing underneath stays. The ATLAS drum milling machine removes the layer at a continuously set milling depth, 82 mm wide per pass, and takes the milled material straight to the extraction – shown on exactly this floor in the Manufaktur video.

What matters here

  • Hard stones, bonded resin

Stones and resin form one composite. Chiselling breaks them off in slabs or lumps; whatever remains has to be reworked before the new covering goes down.

  • Every millimetre counts underneath

Under the stone carpet there is screed, primer and, depending on the room, waterproofing. Grinding or chiselling freehand has no depth stop – the milling depth of the ATLAS, by contrast, is set on the machine.

  • Stone dust plus resin dust

Removal produces fine dust from stone and binder, mostly indoors. It belongs captured at the drum, not swept up afterwards.

Step by step

  1. Choose the milling drum

The ATLAS Milling Drum Hybrid Grey (hard bond, hybrid segments and PCD grit) explicitly lists stone carpet under “suitable materials” in the shop, along with coatings under and over 2 mm, sealants and levelling compounds. Diamond Red (medium bond) is made for the concrete underneath.

Note: All ATLAS milling drums: 82 mm working width, dry only, fitting the ATLAS Max 82, Max 82 BL, Pro 82 BL and the Air ATLAS machines.

  2. Connect the dust extractor

Milling is done dry only and only with a suitable vacuum cleaner connected. The guard with flexible extraction hose and connector comes with the machine. To go with it: Dustcleaner 300 (dust class M) or Dustcleaner 200 (dust class H with HEPA filter).

Note: Both Dustcleaners have an automatic power tool socket: the vacuum starts and stops with the machine.

  3. Set the milling depth, mill off in passes

On the ATLAS Max 82 you set the milling depth continuously and without tools at the adjustment ring, 0–10 mm per pass. Milling is done in 82 mm wide strips; the drum rotation throws the milled material straight towards the extraction.

  4. Edges and junctions

On the ATLAS Max 82 you adjust the machine body up to 150° to the milling drum during work, continuously or in 12 detent positions; on the ATLAS Max 82 BL almost continuously to beyond vertical. In the Manufaktur video: “precise edge work” right into the corner.

Which ATLAS for stone carpet?

All three mill 82 mm wide and 0–10 mm deep with the same milling drum. The difference lies in the drive and how close you get to the wall.

Frequently asked questions

Which machine removes stone carpet?

With a drum milling machine such as the ATLAS: it removes the floor dry at a set depth, 82 mm working width, 0–10 mm working depth (ATLAS Pro 82 BL: 0–8 mm). The Galeski Manufaktur shows the ATLAS MAX 82 on stone carpet in its video.

Which milling drum do I use for stone carpet?

According to the shop, the ATLAS Milling Drum Hybrid Grey – it lists stone carpet under “suitable materials”. If in doubt, Galeski advises on the choice of drum: galeski.shop/en/contact/

Grind or mill off stone carpet?

When milling, the depth setting determines the removal, not the contact pressure as with grinding. The surface is therefore precisely defined and even.

Can I get up to the wall and into the corners?

On the ATLAS Max 82 you adjust the machine body up to 150° to the milling drum during work, on the ATLAS Max 82 BL to beyond vertical – for areas close to walls and edges.

Can I mill wet to reduce dust?

No. The ATLAS drum milling machines and milling drums are intended for dry use only. The dust is captured right at the milling drum with a vacuum cleaner connected.
